Heroes of Bear Creek
Published in Paperback by Ace Books (November, 1983)
Author: Robert E. Howard
Average review score:

A definite must read for humorous bigger than life heroes!
I picked up this book years ago and it is without doubt one of my perennial favorites. The linguistic stylings of Howard are dead on in his depiction of the larger than life Hero Breckinridge Elkins Hero of Bear Creek. The mayhem and violence with which the book is inundated is portrayed in such a fall down and laugh till your sides ache manner that I am left saddened that the supply of works like this is terribly finite, knowing that Howard died at such a tragically young age. Breck Elkins is as an immortal a character as Conan, just as big and dangerous and volcanic but in his case hilarious and not dark and brooding. If you can find this book, buy it at any price, I personally guarantee that no money can replace the laughs and tall tales in this book!

The Homeless Hibernating Bear
Published in Paperback by Gold Leaf Pr (December, 1993)
Authors: Kids Livin Life and Kids Livin' Life
Average review score:

A touching homeless metaphor from children who lived it.
I am not the author of this book, but it was my daughter's idea as an afterschool project for children living in the family shelter in Salt Lake City. During a 12-month period, a total of about 40 children met weekly, sometimes one child would show up, sometimes 30, but they thrashed out the plot, drafted the words and drew the pictures telling the story of Frankie, the homeless hibernating bear. He gets lost in a curious foray into Salt Lake City, takes refuge in a cardboard box and is taken to jail. It is homeless children who befriend and eventually rescue Frankie who is returned to his mother safe and sound. The beauty of this book is the point of view from which it is written. It is the rare voice of a homeless child that we hear in the assumptions and reactions of city residents who are quick to assume the negative when they encounter a child on the street. Some of the profits from this book went to emergency scholarships for homeless students, the remaining profits went to "The School With No Name," the school inside the shelter, to fund future student projects. Originally a project designed to empower disenfranchised children, the story of the emancipation of "Frankie" does more than give its authors an important life lesson. It reminds us all how important it is to hear other voices and to remember that it's true, even one person can make a difference in another's life, be it animal or human. An all-too-uncommon message of tolerance delivered imaginatively by and to children, though as the book points out, there are some adults who would benefit as well.

A Strongly Recommended Book Buy
This is a very important book for anyone who wants to learn to make and sell thier bears. It shows you how to easily follow the patterns and make high quality sellable bears. You must need to know how to sew to pursue making this craft. If you can sew and know how to follow the patterns, then you can make teddy bears. The book goes into precise detail with a photo for each step. It was written by a family team who are making the bears for thier business. I am very inspired by this book, it was exactly what I needed.

warm warm and warm
william joyce's illustrations make this one of my very favorite books: it is the book i always give as a baby shower gift. ANYONE can give "goodnight moon" but this book is special. the first 5 or 6 times i read it to my son i cried at the last line. i like how the FATHER is the one who comforts the boy (on the last page) and it is the mother who looks on lovingly. simply a wonderful, cozy book, if ever there was one.

Mystery at Glacier National Park
WOW! I ordered this book for my 10 year old daughter, but read it first. I loved it and so did she. The adventure takes place at Glacier National park in Montana with brother and sister Jack and Ashley Landon. This is a series of books that takes the duo on many adventures to the various national parks in the United States. There is always a hair-raising experience, plus the added benefit of learning about nature, geography, history and wildlife. My daughter particularly enjoyed learning so many amazing facts about Grizzleys. I highly recommend this book--not only will your child love it, but so will you!

Great children's book
We found this book while traveling in Bermuda back in the late 1960's and it immediately became the favorite of our son and regular bedtime reading. After he outgrew it, it was placed in our law office waiting room and was immensely popular - with many parents asking to borrow it so they could finish reading it to their children. It always returned and was finally removed when the wear on the binding became too severe. I wish I could find it again - and would be happy to have a couple of extras around ..... the publisher should reissue the book.

I Remember Paul "Bear" Bryant: Personal Memories of College Footballs Most Legendary Coach As Told by the People Who Knew Him Best
Published in Hardcover by Cumberland House (01 August, 2001)
Author: Al Browning
Average review score:

Tells of a master of reverse psychology
Paul "Bear" Bryant was a football coach rightly beloved by fans of the Alabama Crimson Tide, for his team won six national championships, thirteen Southeastern Conference titles, and twenty-four consecutive appearances in bowl games from 1959 through 1982. Those who knew him best continue to love him, and Al Browning's I Remember Paul "Bear" Bryant is heartfelt testimony to that love. Dozens of his friends and acquaintances, from former football players to childhood friends to family to opponents on the field reminisce in their own words the man they knew. I Remember Paul "Bear" Bryant tells of a master of reverse psychology; a steely disciplinarian; and a truly kind human being beneath the tough-as-nails exterior. Paul Bryant has moved on from this life, but he will not be forgotten. Recommended for anyone who would wish a glimpse into the life of one of the greatest football coaches who ever lived.
